The seven coloured earth in Chamarel is one of the most popular inland attractions in Mauritius. As far as I know, it’s the only one of its kind in the world. Layered across an area of roughly 400 metre square (my guess), sand of seven distinct colours- red, yellow, blue, violet, brown, green and purple – make up the dunes.

What’s intriguing is that the sand always settle separately creating a marvelous striped display of colours. Astonishingly, the dunes never seem to erode in spite of the regular rainfall.

The ride to Chamarel is very scenic and will allow you to see a different facet of Mauritius. Along the way you can visit the Black River Gorges. I highly recommend it.

The land is also home to a number of giant tortoises which are always a hit with kids. People are always in awe of our tortoises which I used to take for granted considering I grew up with one in the family.
