We spent only one day and one night in Yangon and frankly I wouldn’t stay any longer. Yangon is a city which sleeps at 9:00pm so unless you like spending time in your hotel room watching TV, you’ll get easily bored at night. Plus Myanmar has so much more to offer with places like Bagan, Inle Lake and Kyaiktiyo. The highlight of course was the Shwedagon Pagoda which is truly breathtaking.

We stayed at Orchid Hotel at US$60/night. It’s probably not the best hotel you’ve stayed at, but the service was pretty good and the room was decent.

In Southeast Asia, one of the best experiences is to try the local food. In Yangon, the food was good, but I must say I ended up having a bad case of diarrhea for the next three days. To be fair, I was the only one to end up being sick so it may simply be my weak stomach.

We also visited the Bogyoke Aung San markets, new and old. They specialize in gems so if you’re into that, then go wild. As for me, I spent a couple of hours just walking around without buying anything.
